Raised Beds

Many farmers miss opportunities to produce high-quality crops because they ignore what goes on under the soil, but developing a strong root system is vital to yielding a good crop. Roots need light and airy soil in order to establish a strong anchor for the plant; they also need access to water, air and nutrients. Raised beds create the perfect environment for a strong root foundation.

Soil is plowed and tilled before being shaped into beds, which allows for better drainage and ensures optimal soil conditions for crop growth. Raised beds also make typical farm chores like weeding, pesticide application and harvesting easier because the crop is more accessible.

Often the most basic technologies can make all the difference for rural farmers. Introducing farmer groups to good agricultural practices translates into transformative income growth. Smallholder farmers are routinely doubling or tripling their incomes after planting with raised beds.
